Churchill once said “My tastes are simple, I am easily satisfied with the best”, so it’s fitting that Pol Roger honoured his name with their flagship cuvée. Released only in spectacular years, this 95-point 2009 is the powerful rich style he adored.
The Pol Roger family’s superb Champagnes have been enjoyed by royalty, global leaders and glitterati since 1849. During that time, their most famous advocate has been Sir Winston Churchill, who preferred a rich, powerful style. After his death, the Pol Roger house set about assembling a cuvée Sir Winston would have loved. The 2009 was described as “Full-bodied, fleshy and textural, deep and concentrated” by Wine Advocate. It’s predominately Pinot Noir, providing richness and depth, with Chardonnay (all Grand Cru) adding freshness and finesse. Traditionally, this cuvée is released several years later than Pol Roger’s standard vintages, to reflect Sir Winston’s fondness for aged Champagnes. “A fascinating prestige cuvée” (WA) to savour.
